Maria Sakkari v Donna Vekic Head to Head

There have been five main draw matches between these two at the highest level and rather interestingly, Vekic leads 4-1. This includes a win last season at the San Diego on a hardcourt surface.

Sakkari Comes Through Easily against Gracheva

It wasn’t the quickest of starts for Sakkari in her second round match against Varvara Gracheva but in the end, the Greek number one came through without too much issue.

Sakkari was on court for an hour and 37 minutes in her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Gracheva, following on from her first round win over Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

Faced with six break-points in the entire match, Sakkari did not flinch even once while helping herself to three breaks of serves from the 12 opportunities she got. In doing so, she won her seventh match of the season to go with those two defeats.

It’s those two losses, however, which could weigh heavily on Sakkari’s mind given they came at crucial stages of those tournaments – a defeat to Martina Trevisan at the United Cup and a third round exit at the Australian Open at the hands of Lin Zhu.

Can she take a step forward in her attempt to win her second career WTA title?

Vekic Routs Brengle in Continuing Form

It should not come as too much of a surprise how Vekic came through in her second round match against Madison Brengle.

The Croat, who was outside the top 100 of the rankings exactly a year ago, has come through some trying times over that period but done remarkably well. So much that she entered this tournament ranked 33rd in the world and another solid showing here will take her very close to her career-best ranking of 19th in the world.

For someone who was struggling with her fitness so badly last year that she wanted to quit, her current scenario might not be that much of a problem.

It was also no problem against Brengle as Vekic won her ninth match of the season 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 17 minutes to seal her last eight berth.

And she now takes on an opponent who is ranked in the top 10 but at the same time one whom she has defeated multiple times in the past. Can she repeat the same again?

Sakkari v Vekic Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is 8/11 to win this, an indicator what bookmakers think of her opponent’s rhythm and momentum. We anticipate a three-setter or a longish two-setter here.
