Veronika Kudermetova v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Kudermetova leads 2-1 on head to head. Two of these came on grass where it’s 1-1 while the only match in a hardcourt competition, the 2021 Indian Wells Open, went in favour of Kudermetova.

Mertens Fails to Give Kudermetova Too Much Trouble

Kudermetova was a favourite going into her second round match but was also coming off an under-par performance at the Australian Open where she had lost to Katie Volynets in the second round.

After an opening bye here, Kudermetova ensured there were no remnants of that defeat when she took on Elise Mertens here.

In the end, Mertens did put up some fight but couldn’t do enough to even push the match into a third set. Kudermetova needed an hour and 35 minutes to clinch a 6-1, 7-5 win over her Belgian opponent.

While Kudermetova didn’t face any break-points in the first set, she fell a break behind in the second. The Russian came back to take a 5-2 lead, but then missed a match-point on her opponent serve in two different games and lost her serve for Mertens to level things out at 5-5.

Kudermetova held on to her serve to love and then broke Mertens one more time in the 12th game to seal the win.

Samsonova Wins Successive Matches for the First Time in 2023

While she had struggled to get past Claire Liu in the first round, Samsonova’s performance in her second round match against Barbora Krejcikova would have given her a lot more satisfaction.

Samsonova won 7-5, 7-6 (6) in two hours and 25 minutes to make it her second successive win for the first time this season. This follows a second round loss at the Adelaide International, an opening defeat at the Adelaide International 2 and a second round exit at the Australian Open.

This time around, Samsonova had come into her second round encounter against Krejcikova as a second favourite. While Krejcikova served for the first set at one point and Samsonova missed five match-points in the second, she finally made it through off her sixth.

What needs to be seen is if Samsonova can find a way to overcome her inconsistencies during matches against a solidly consistent countrywoman.

Kudermetova v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova starts off a 8/11 favourite to clinch this and we will have to go with her in this one. Samsonova won’t be shy of putting up a fight though.

Fan of all sports but a tennis lover at heart. Bawled her heart out when Federer missed those two Championships points at Wimbledon 2019 but then again, Nadal won 2022 Australian Open from two sets down. Such is life! (yes, loves both Federer and Nadal in equal doses!)
