Ramos-Vinolas Wins Another Three-Setter

Albert Ramos-Vinolas’ love affair with Cordoba continued as the defending champion reached a third consecutive semifinal in the clay court tournament.

The world no. 54 had finished runner-up to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in 2021 but won the title last year by beating Alejandro Tabilo in the final.

He is now a win away from reaching a third consecutive final.

Off to a 0-4 start in 2023, the Spaniard got his first win of the season over Dusan Lajovic in the Round of 16. Having received a first round bye, the third seed beat the Serbian 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in two hours and 10 minutes.

He carried that form into the quarterfinal of Friday, defeating Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. The two hour and 12 minute quarterfinal saw both players struggled with the first serve. But Ramos-Vinolas won 63% points on his second serve while Sousa could win just 38% points on the back of his second serve.

In all, Ramos-Vinolas converted 5 of 9 break points and saved 6 of 10 to improve to 14-3 in Cordoba. Can he reach a third consecutive final?

Coria Advances As Cerundolo Withdraws

Sixth seed Federico Coria marched into the semifinals after a second straight opponent retired from the contest.

The world no. 67,w ho had scored a come-from-behind win in the opening round against Thiago Monteiro, led Marco Cecchinato 6-3, 3-1 when the Italian retired in the second round.

On Friday, the Argentine was leading compatriot and second seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-0 when the latter retired with a leg injury.

The 30-year-old Coria too had a 0-4 start to the season, but has found form on his preferred surface.

Coria, who has reached one ATP final before, will look to reach his second on Saturday. He is making a fourth appearance in Cordoba and has improved his tournament record to 6-3. His best came in 2021, when he made it to the semifinals of the Cordoba Open.

Coria is now on an eight-match winning streak. He had won the Concepcion Challenger last week and looks in great touch at the moment.

Albert Ramos-Vinolas v Federico Coria Prediction and Tip

Ramos-Vinolas tends to do well in Cordoba and he is on verge of a third consecutive final. He also has more experience than Coria, but the latter is in stunning form at the moment. Expect this to be a very close affair, with the 35-year-old  coming out on top and reaching a 12th tour-level final.
