Roberto Carballes Baena v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

Coming into this tournament on the back of three successive defeats and facing one of the more experienced players on clay on tour, Carballes Baena wasn’t quite the favourite against Albert Ramos-Vinolas. And yet, he came through in straight sets to set up a second round meeting with the local lad Etcheverry.
Carballes Baena won 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 17 minutes to carve out a place in the second round, following on from having done exactly that at the Pune Open.
Slamming 11 aces and winning 71% of his first serve points, Carballes Baena saved all the three break-points he faced in the first set while breaking Ramos-Vinolas in the 11th game. He missed five set-points while serving it out but clinched the opener off his sixth.
In the second set, Carballes Baena traded service breaks in the third and fourth games before breaking Ramos-Vinolas in the fifth again. He held on to his serve from that point on to grab a surprise win.

Etcheverry Also Surprises His Opponent
Much like Carballes Baena, even Etcheverry had entered his opening round encounter on the back of just one main draw win this entire season. And in the same manner as his Spanish opponent in this match, Etcheverry was the second favourite coming into this.
So much like what happened in the Carballes Baena encounter, Etcheverry also managed a win, surprising Hugo Dellien from being a set down. In a match last two hours and 23 minutes, Etcheverry won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to make it to round two.
While he lost his serve twice in the first set, Etcheverry then saved the only two break-points which followed after that in the match. In turn he broke Dellien twice apiece in the next two sets too, adding to his two career wins he has had on clay.
Now coming up against his Spanish opponent, Etcheverry will have an even chance and that’s reflected in the winning odds for the two players too.
