Caroline Garcia v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

Garcia has a perfect 3-0 record against the Greek. She beat Sakkari in Wuhan in 2017 and twice in 2022. First of those wins last year came at the Cincinnati Open, while the second came in the semifinals of the WTA Finals.

Garcia Survives a Scare

World no. 5 Caroline Garcia survived a scare in the Round of 16 on Wednesday as she had to fight back from a set down to beat world no. 123 Karolina Muchova.

Seeded no. 3 in Doha, Garcia had a first round bye and was playing her first match of the tournament on Wednesday. But she didn’t start off well as Muchova took the first set with a dominant performance in the tiebreak.

The Frenchwoman then had to claw her way back into the contest. She got the solitary break of the second set to draw level and then got the solitary break of the third to win the three hour contest 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4.

Garcia won 75% points on the back of her first serve. She saved one of two break points in the match and broke her opponent just three times despite having 16 breaking opportunities.

The world no. 5 was in brilliant form last year and has carried that form to 2023, as she improved her season record to 11-3 following Wednesday’s win. Last week, she had made it to her 15th WTA final in Lyon, but couldn’t add to her 11 titles, going down to Alycia Parks.

Garcia had earlier made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2. She had a stunning 47-22 run last year, winning four titles, including the season-ending WTA Finals.

She will be playing in the quarterfinals in Qatar for the second time. Can she advance to semis?

Sakkari Dispatches Alexandrova

World no. 7 Maria Sakkari knocked out Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round on Wednesday to march into her third straight quarterfinal in Qatar.

The Greek, who had lost in the last eight stage in 2021, had made it to the semifinals last year. She will be aiming to match that result this year as well as she is just a win away from achieving that.

After trading a break early in the first set against Alexandrova, Sakkari took charge of the proceedings and never looked back as she claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Sakkari converted 4 of 7 break points and saved 2 of 3 during teh course of the match.

It was a much easier outing for the fifth seed, who had needed three sets to see off China’s Qinwen Zheng in the opener. That match had lasted two hours and five minuets before Sakkari won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Thanks to the two wins, Sakkari is now 10-3 in 2023. She had finished with a 39-23 record last year, reaching four finals, but unfortunately, she finished runner-up in each of them. In fact, she has won just one title from seven finals so far in her career.

She has looked promising in the first two matches, can she pull off a surprise win on Thursday and keep charging towards another final?

Garcia v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Garcia is in excellent form, she has also dominated this rivalry and is expected to keep her perfect record intact on Thursday.
