Second seed Cameron Norrie escaped early elimination as he fought back from a set down to beat world no. 191 Facundo Diaz Acosta in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
The world no. 12, who had received a first-round bye, conceded a break late in the opening set to fall 0-1 behind. With the first set in the bag, the Argentine raised his level in the second set, breaking first to lead 1-3. Norrie pulled the break back but the local hope went up a break again to lead 3-5. He could not close out the match as Norrie bounced back and then broke a third time again to finish the set by winning the last four games and forcing the decider.
Both players traded a break early in the third before Norrie edged an edge of the seat tiebreaker for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) victory in close to three hours.
The lefty, who is been in great touch this year, improved to 11-2 in 2023. He had won all three of his matches at the United Cup, was a finalist in Auckland, reached the third round of the Australian Open and won both his singles matches at the Davos Cup.
A four-time champion on the tour, he won his first clay court title in Lyon last year. Playing in Buenos Aires for the first time, can he make it to the semifinals with a win on Friday?

Etcheverry Scores a Second Straight Comeback Win
For the second round in a row, Tomás Martín Etcheverry bounced back after losing the first set to keep his chances alive in the tournament.
The Argentine, who rallied past Hugo Dellien in the opening round, knocked out Roberto Carballés Baena in the second round on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament.
This is the first time that the world no. 82 has made it to the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament.
In the second round, Carballes Baena got the solitary break of the first set, but Etcheverry made a resounding comeback, breaking the world no 76 twice in the second and twice in the third to win the two-and-a-half contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Thanks to the two wins, Etcheverry improved his season record to 5-3, across levels. The first two wins came in the qualifying rounds in Adelaide-2, while his third came at the Australian Open, where he won his first-ever match at a Grand Slam, defeating Gregoire Barrere.

Although Norrie had a tough time beating the lowly ranked Diaz Acosta in the first round, the second seed will still be the favourite in the quarterfinal. Etcheverry is a clay court specialist and he won’t make it easy for the Briton, but Norrie is vastly experienced and having made the adjustment from hard to clay in the first round, he should be prepared for the last eight clash. Expect a three-setter with Norrie coming through.
