Jessica Pegula v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Sakkari leads 4-2 on head to head. This includes a win in the WTA Finals late last season for Sakkari and Pegula winning the Guadalajara Open by defeating the Greek number one in the final.

Pegula Cruises Past Haddad Maia

Haddad Maia is ranked 12th in the world and had come into this tournament on the back of successive wins over players of calibre of Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina. No mean feat that.

And yet, Pegula gave Haddad Maia no chances in their quarterfinal match which lasted less than an hour and a half. The American came through 6-3, 6-2 after making a slightly slow start to the match.

The pair exchanged a break of serves in the very first two games of the opening set but from that point on there was no looking back for Pegula. A break in the six game of the opening set and two breaks in the very first service games from Haddad Maia in the second set is all that Pegula needed.

What Pegula would hope is for is better first serves in having found them just 55% of the times in her quarterfinal. She won two-thirds of those points, a number she would want to improve too.

Sakkari Scrappy But Ekes Out a Win against Garcia

Sakkari made it her third successive win of the tournament for the third time this season when she edged past Caroline Garcia in her quarterfinal. In a match lasting two hours and 43 minutes, Sakkari won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) to seal her place in the final four.

What was interesting to see was Garcia found it tough to break Sakkari throughout the match. She had just three opportunities and missed all of them even as Sakkari got past her opponent’s serve on two occasions in the first set.

There wasn’t too much else that separated the two players – both won 73% of their first serve points and Sakkari was only marginally better with her second serves. In the end, it was the player who held her nerve at the most crucial juncture – the final set tie-breaker – who came through.

What would be interesting to see is if Sakkari can now make it four wins in four – something she hasn’t done this season.

Pegula v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Pegula might not be the quickest on court but possesses one of the best hand-eye coordination that should help her get past her opponent’s power. Expecting another three-setter.
