Alcaraz Tops Lajovic

Back on court after an injury layoff, Carlos Alcaraz is looking dangerous again as the world no. 2 reached the semifinals of the Buenos Aires Open with a straight sets win over Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The top seed faced some stiff resistance from the Serb in the opening set with Lajovic coming back from a break down twice to stay on serve. But a third break in the 10th game proved to be decisive for Alcaraz, who took a one-set-to-love lead.

Alcaraz raised his level in the second set. He saved both the break points that he faced in the set and converted one of the three breaking chances he held to complete a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The 19-year-old is coming off an incredible 57-13 season, which included five titles, including the U.S. Open, and two runner-up finishes. He suffered an abdominal injury at the Paris Masters in November, which forced him to miss the tournaments in Australia this year.

Playing for the first time in 2023, he began his Buenos Aires campaign with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over another Serbian Laslo Djere in the round of 16. He put up a better show in the next match and will hope for an even better showing in the semifinal. The six-time tour-level champion is looking to reach a ninth final with a win on Saturday.

Zapata Miralles Reaches First ATP Semifinal

Bernabe Zapata Miralles is having a moment in Buenos Aires. The 26-year-old Spaniard knocked out two seeded local favourites in back-to-back matches to reach his maiden Tour semifinal.

Zapata Miralles, who began the tournament with a three-set win over fellow Spaniard Pedro Martínez, stunned the 2021 champion and last year’s runner-up, Diego Schwartzman in the round of 16 on Thursday. He followed up the 6-1, 6-3 victory with another upset on Friday, this time taking down the fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo in a thrilling three-set contest.

Zapata Miralles took the first set after getting the solitary break in the fourth game. He was then edged by Cerundolo in a neck and neck second set, which saw both break each other twice before the fifth seed edged the tiebreak.

In the final set, the Argentine had five opportunities to break Zapata Miralles’ serve, but the latter saved all of them and capitalised on one of the two breaking chances that he created for himself.

The 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 victory over the world no. 30 came in two hours and 35 minutes and lifted the world no. 74 into his first semifinal.

It also imprived him to 4-4 for teh season. Can he pull off another upset on Saturday?

Alcaraz v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz will be wary of Zapata Miralles’ giant-killing abilities but the top seed is slowly finding the form that took him to incredible heights last year. Zapata Miralles will give a tough fight, but eventually the world no. 2 is expected to win the contest and reach the final.
