Donna Vekić v Yafan Wang Head to Head

This will be the first time that the two women will meet at the highest level of the game.

Vekić, Closing in on Third Title

Vekić is having a good week in Acapulco so far, and after beating Christina McHale of the United States on Wednesday, had an equally comfortable victory over Britain’s Johanna Kona in her quarter-final on Friday. She will be expecting to breeze past Wang, a woman ranked some 60 places below her in the world, to make her second final of the year.

She will also know that she is now favourite to win her third WTA Tour title, to go with the Malaysian Open in 2014, and the Nottingham Open in 2017.

Yang in Largely Unchartered Territory

For Wang, the world number 85, this has been an unexpectedly good week, helped, in part, by the draw that worked in her favour, as the seeds in her part of it all fell by the wayside.

Having started in Acapulco with few expectations, her first round match with Czech Marie Bouzková proved to offer little challenge, and then she benefitted from the early retirement of opponent Monica Puig Marchán in her next encounter.

That brought her a quarter-final against the Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia, surprise winner over the number one seed Sloane Stephens, and she was able to beat her in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Now she is in the semi-final, largely unchartered territory for her.  She has reached this stage in a senior WTA tour event only once before, back in 2014 at the Guangzhou Open.

Vekić v Wang Predictions & Tips

Vekić will start the heavy favourite for this match. She is higher ranked and has recent experience of reaching a WTA tour final, having lost in St. Petersburg to Kiki Bertens just four weeks ago.

Wang has had a good run to get this far, but Vekić is a step up in class of over any of her previous opponents this week, and is a heavy outsider.

Tip: Vekic to win in three sets: 8/5 (bet365)
