Karolina Pliskova v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Pliskova has won both their previous meetings. The first of those wins came in the quarterfinals in Miami and the second came in the semifinal in Rome. Both those wins were straight set victories.

Pliskova Searching for Consistency in 2023

2015 Dubai Open finalist Karolina Pliskova will be playing in the tournament for the 10th time.

The world no. 19 is 10-5 this season, but barring a strong showing at the Australian Open, her record in the main draws has been poor. Five of her 10 wins this year have come in the qualifying rounds.

Pliskova began with a first round defeat in Adelaide-1. She won her qualifying round matches in Adelaide-2 but failed to register a win in the main draw.

The former no. 1 found some rhythm at the Australian Open, reaching the quarterfinals before suffering a shock defeat to Magda Linette. She played in Abu Dhabi next, winning one and losing one, and then qualified for the Qatar Open, by beating Ana Bogdan, Harriet Dart and Leylah Fernandez but went down to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round.

So it’s been a topsy-turvy journey for the two-time Grand Slam finalist so far this year.

A 16-time tour level champion from 32 finals, Pliskova remained without a title last year. It was the first time since 2013 that she failed to reach a single final. From 2013 to 2021, she had at least reach one final each year.

She will be desperate to start well in the tournament and build from there.

Vondrousova In Fine Form

World no. 76 Marketa Vondrousova is in decent touch this year. She was a semifinalist in Dubai last year and will be looking to make another deep run this year.

The Czech left-hander is 7-3 this season. She reached the quarterfinals in Adelaide; made it to the third round of the Australian Open and found her way to the semifinals at the Linz Open.

So overall it’s a good start for the 2019 French Open finalist. What’s more, four of her wins have come against players ranked higher than her, with one coming against the world no. 2 Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open. It was Vondrousova’s seventh top ten victory, her fourth over a world no. 2.

A winner of one title from four finals, Vondrousova has not reached a final since her run to the final in Roland Garros in 2019. She came close to reaching one in Dubai last year, but withdrew from the semifinal even before taking the court. The reason was a right adductor injury.

She later underwent a wrist surgery in April which forced her to miss the rest of the season. As a result of her hiatus, she had fallen out of the top 100. But an ITF title on her return in November followed by consistent results since then has seen her move up the rankings.

Can she keep climbing back the rankings with another solid showing in Dubai?

Pliskova v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a close contest. While Pliskova is tthe higher ranked player, form is on Vondrousova’s side. Expect a three-setter with Vondrousova edging out the former no. 1.
