Davidovich Fokina Was a Quarterfinalist Last Year

World no. 31 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be making his second appearance in the main draw in Doha this year. The world no. 31 was a quarterfinalist on his debut last year.

This year, he brings a 4-4 season record into the tournament.

Davidovich Fokina won his first two matches of the season to reach the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2, but has since then not been able to produce consecutive wins. He won a five-setter against Alexander Bublik in the opening round of the Australian Open but went down in another five setter to Tommy Paul in round 2.

The 23-year-old also got through the first round in Montpellier after Ugo Humbert retired, but since then he has suffered two losses. First it was Quentin Halys who beat the Spaniard in the second round in Montpellier, then it was Daniil Medvedev who ousted him in the Rotterdam opener last week.

So overall, it has been a mixed year for Davidovich Fokina this year, who had a 21-26 record in 2022 across levels. But despite the host of disappointments he made it to his maiden ATP 1000 final last year, falling only to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo.

Can he overcome the last two setbacks and start with a win in Doha?

Lestienne Is 4-4 In 2023

Facing Davidovich Fokina will be Frenchman Constant Lestienne, who too has had a mixed run in 2023.

The Frenchman, who broke into the top 100 for the first time in August last year, reached a career-high ranking of no. 48 in the first week of February this year. But he has fallen in the ranking since then and heads to Doha as the world no. 54.

Lestienne’s best this year came in Auckland, where he beat Pedro Cachin, Gregoire Barrere and Laslo Djere to reach the semifinals, but couldn’t take part in the final four clash due to an injury.

The 30-year-old next made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open and won the opening round match, but he couldn’t go deper as he was stopped in the second round by Cameron Norrie. Lestienne won both his qualifiers in Rotterdam last week, but lost in the first round to Holger Rune.

Can he make an impact in Doha?

Davidovich Fokina v Lestienne Prediction and Tip

Davidovich Fokina is the more accomplished player. He has a better record over his career and has beaten two top 50 players this year, while Lestienne has beaten none. So the Spaniard will have a slight edge in this one.
