Nicolas Jarry v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

They played once before and Martinez won that match. It was played last year in Kitzbuhel and it was a very close match despite the Spaniard winning in two sets.

Jarry Downs Musetti

Nicolas Jarry had to play the qualifiers in order to make the main draw in Rio but he played amazing tennis to get it done. He continued playing that amazing tennis to secure round two, beating Lorenzo Musetti in two sets. He didn’t just beat him, he smashed him comfortably showing himself more than ready for the top 100.

He was once ranked in the top 10 and played well on all surfaces including clay which is his best one. For now, he’s mostly focusing on clay and this swing is crucial for him to get more wins. The record so far is 8-3 with clay being 3-1.

He played well on hard courts as well and it’s good to see him back after his suspension. A tall player with a good serve, Jarry relies on his groundstrokes to win points but he’s capable of mixing it up as well.

He looked well all week in Rio as the condition really suit him, particularly his serve. If he keeps it up he could go deep.

Martinez Earns First Clay Win

Pedro Martinez finally got his first win of the season and it was a very good one over Cristian Garin. Now Garin is a good player but he’s been playing rather underwhelming for a very long time and this win is not as impressive as it would have been three years ago.

Still, it was a huge win for Martinez because he’s not been playing that well. It was the first clay win of the season and it certainly won’t be the last one.

Martinez grew up on the surface and plays really well. He can attack, he can defend, and he can play very long rallies if he needs to. There is just so much he can do on a clay court and he’s always going to be dangerous on one. Jarry is playing better right now but he’s not unbeatable.

Martinez won their only clash last year and he can do so again. He’ll need to figure out the return but I’m confident he can do it.

Jarry v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Jarry is favoured to win this one and I understand why. He’s playing a bit better right now but generally, they are pretty close. I know this is going to be a close one but I guess I’d side with Jarry considering the momentum right now.
