Rublev’s Shaky Form

Andrey Rublev disappointed largely in Rotterdam last week losing to Alex de Minaur. The loss itself was not that terrible because the Australian played really well but it was Rublev’s general form that seems to be dipping. Indoors are his conditions and Rotterdam has been a superb event for him so far in his career so it was surprising.

Doha offers a different challenge but it’s not one he minds. He won the event in 2020 and played in the 2021 semi-final. Last year he was in Marseille so he didn’t play in this event. Simply said, Rublev needs a win, there is no question about it.

His form has been all over the place and he needs to win the winning formula again. It starts with his serve because his serve hasn’t been very good lately. There are not a lot of free points and his forehand hasn’t been that sharp either.

When he rediscovers those two shots he should get back to his best days. Doha offers him a good chance to do so but it’s a tough opponent.

Griekspoor Survives Halys

The Dutch player battled past Quentin Halys in what was a very close and long match. Both players are known for their serve so it was expected that it would be a close match. Griekspoor generally plays close matches and he’s one of the toughest players to break.

So far it’s been a spectacular year for him as he’s 11-2 so far with his serve doing a lot of damage. His groundstrokes have also improved and you can see his confidence in the way he attacks the return of strong servers. There is very little fear or inhibition and that makes him dangerous.

He will eye an upset here because he can do it. He’s serving better right now and he can certainly hold his own in rallies. If he gets a poor display from his opponent, expect Griekspoor to advance.

I do worry about his fatigue after the long week in Rotterdam and then the travel and the long match against Halys. He isn’t known as one of the premier athletes on Tour.

Rublev v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

It’s a tricky event where Rublev is expected to win due to the talent he has and due to how well he played here in the past. I could see him struggle a bit so the over doesn’t sound like a bad option.
