Alexander Bublik v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head
Barrere leads 2-1 at the tour level, while they are 2-2 from all their previous matches.
Most recently they met in Montpellier earlier this month and Barrere won that match in a dramatic three set contest. The Frenchman had squandered three match points in the second set tiebreak, allowing Bublik to come back in the match and force the tiebreak. The third set also needed a tiebreak, but eventually the Frenchman edged out the Kazakh.

Alexander Bublik had played eight matches in the run-up to the Marseille Open, but the Kazakh had lost all eight of them in an unexpected start to 2023.
The pressure was immense in the opening round on Monday and it got even bigger once Filip Krajinovic took the first set. The world no. 50 bounced back with a late break in the second set and then raced to a 3-0 lead following a double break in the third. The Serb pulled a break back, but Bublik held his nerves to close out the contest 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and register his first win of the year.
Bublik, who went 33-27 last year, ended a 10-match losing streak. The last time he had won a match was in the second round in Basel in October.
This year, he lost both his matches at the United Cup and the David Cup and made first round exits from Auckland, Australian Open, Montpellier Open and Rotterdam Open.
He would be happy to have finally ended the streak and will now look to build on the start.
The 25-year-old is making his second appearance in Marseille. He was a semifinalist on debut in 2020.

Barrere Knocks Out the Eighth Seed
Gregoire Barrere has been playing some wonderful tennis this year and as a result of that he has made considerable gains in the rankings.
Currently sitting on a career-high of no. 58, Barrere produced another solid performance on Tuesday, defeating eighth seed Marc-Andrea Huesler in the opener and moving into the second round for the third time at a tour level tournament this year and a fourth time overall.
Barrere had made it to the quarterfinals in Montpellier and had gone from qualifiers to the round of 16 in Auckland and Rotterdam.
He also went past the first round in his only Challenger Tour tournament of the season in Quimper, but he didn’t stop there, and added four more wins in the tournament to lift his sixth title at that level.
The 29-year-old right-hander is 14-5 from all levels this year.
In Tuesday’s first round clash, Barrere did not face a single break point, while he converted 3 of 7 to beat the world no. 48. He will now be looking to beat Bublik for the second time in 2023.

Going by how they went in their last meeting, this one promises to be another thriller. A first win in 2023 would have given Bublik’s confidence a boost, but Barrere has been winning matches consistently and will go into this contest in better form.
