Jannik Sinner v Arthur Fils Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came as recently as the Montpellier semifinal earlier this month and Sinner had won that in straight sets on his way to winning the title.

Sinner Returns after Rotterdam Final

Not only was Sinner a finalist at the Rotterdam last week, he had also gone all the way in Montpellier before that. While he lost the previous final to Daniil Medvedev, he had defeated Maxime Cressy at the Montpellier Open to win the title there.

Sinner enters this competition on the back of eight wins from the previous nine matches as a result of those two tournament results. He also starts off with a bye here.

So far this season, Sinner has been steady but would have liked to do a lot more at the Australian Open where he was sent packing in the fourth round. There he had lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

His only other loss in 2023 came at the Adelaide International where the Italian went down to Sebastian Korda. With two of these three defeats having come against top-10 players, Sinner will know he needs to find that additional gear in his game if he wants to challenge the top players at the highest level.

The other way of looking at things here is he has enough pedigree to get the better of the likes of his opponent in this match, and with ease too.

Fils Eases Past Safiullin

While Fils is yet to challenge some of the top players in the world, it must be quickly added he has exhibited enough talent so far for tennis fans to take notice.

Take the example of this year itself in which Fils has featured in two Challenger and one top-level ATP tournaments. And has won 12 of the 14 matches he’s played.

Fils won a tournament in Oeiras, lost in the final of the Quimper Challenger and then went down to Sinner himself in the semifinal of the Montpellier Open.

And here in the first round, Fils defeated Roman Safiullin in straight sets to set up this meeting with Sinner again. He was on court for an hour and 27 minutes and wasn’t broken even once in his 6-4, 6-3 victory even as he got the better of Safiullin’s serve on three occasions.

Against Sinner things might not be as easy but as far as confidence to test out the world number 12 goes, it will be a part of his repertoire.

Sinner v Fils Prediction and Tip

Despite all that Fils has done we cannot help but feel Sinner should not have too many issues here and a straight-set win looks the most likely result.
