Carlos Alcaraz v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at this very competition in 2022 and Alcaraz had won that in straight sets.

Alcaraz Wins against Alves

It took Alcaraz nearly two hours spread across two days but he finally won his weather-interrupted opening round match against local lad Mateus Alves to make it five victories in a row.

The Argentina Open winner from last week, Alcaraz lost his serve early in the match to go 0-2 down but came back with two breaks of serves in the first set as he settled into the contest.

Rather interestingly, Alcaraz was broken one more time in the second set after he had taken a 3-2 lead. The world number two then went right ahead despite frittering four break-point opportunities in the seventh game there and soon served it out to love to make the round two.

Alcaraz will hope for an easier contest come the second round against a player who is well-known for his clay play but has been off-colour for a while now.

Fognini Wins Maiden Match of the Season

Fognini had come into his opening encounter of this tournament against Marcelo Barrios Vera with no wins under his belt for the season. Three tournaments at Auckland, Melbourne and Buenos Aires had left him winless and going up against Barrios Vera, a clay court specialist himself, Fognini wasn’t even the favourite.

Which is why his 6-2, 6-3 win over Barrios Vera will resonate even better with him than otherwise. He was on court for an hour and 31 minutes.

The first set was bit of a cakewalk for Fognini who managed to avoid facing any break-points and while he was broken once in the second it came after he had gained a 5-2 lead. He broke right back to claim the victory.

The last time Fognini had won successive matches in the main draw of an ATP tournament was way back in April last year. He might need to wait a little while longer to repeat that feat again.

Alcaraz v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz is a huge favourite here and we reckon a straight-set win looks very likely for the world number two.
