Stan Wawrinka v Arthur Fils Head to Head

The 38-year-old Wawrinka and and the teenaged Fils have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Wawrinka Needs Three Sets against Gasquet

It was never going to be easy for Wawrinka to get past the equally experienced and the in-form Richard Gasquet but in the end he managed to carve out a comeback-from-behind win in the second round.

Wawrinka needed two hours and 26 minutes to clinch a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory which saw both players drop serves at various points in the match. In the first set, Wawrinka had six opportunities to break his opponent after having lost his own serve in the very first game. He failed to break back.

Gasquet went 4-2 up after an early break but once Wawrinka had finally helped himself to his first break of the match there was no looking back. He broke for the second time in the 12th game to level the match and then two more times in the decider to claim the win.

These two wins should push Wawrinka into the top 100 of the rankings which is the first time he will be there since falling out of it in January 2022. Can he keep improving in the same manner?

Fils Helped by Sinner Withdrawal

It had taken Fils an hour and 27 minutes to carve out a straight-set win over Roman Safiullin in the opening round and that’s where he would have thought his journey in the tournament ends.

After all, he was going to face Jannik Sinner in the second round and the kind of form that the Italian has shown in recent times a Fils win didn’t look too likely.

As it turned out, Fils did not win his match but he still advanced to the quarterfinal after Sinner withdrew from the competition because of illness issues.

Fils had played in the quarterfinal last week on Rotterdam too and defeated Quentin Halys. He had gone on to lose to Sinner in the last four but now that the Italian is out of his way, can he go the distance here?

Wawrinka v Fils Prediction and Tip

Wawrinka starts off a favourite here at 4/5 but we think this is a good chance for Fils to express himself and even challenge some of the best in the world in the later rounds. Could go to a third set.
