Alcaraz Remains Perfect in 2023

Carlos Alcaraz improved to 8-0 in 2023 as the world no. 2 rallied from a set down to beat Nicolas Jarry in the semifinal of the Rio Open on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, who missed the start of the season due to a hamstring injury in his right leg, began the season in Buenos Aires last week, and went all the way to the title by beating Norrie in the final.

In Rio, where he is the defending champion, Alcaraz began his campaign with a straight sets win over local hope Mateus Alves in the first round. Alcaraz then scored a come-from-behind win over Fabio Fognini in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinal, Alcaraz edged out Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), while in the semifinal, he won another thriller, this time against Jarry.

Broken early in the first set, Alcaraz got the break back later in the set, but couldn’t match the Chilean in the tiebreak as Jarry took a 1-0 lead. The second set was equally competitive with the world no. 139 continuing to match Alcaraz. Neither player got broken in the first 11 games of the set, but then the Spaniard turned on the magic. He broke Jarry to love in the 12th game to draw level at one-set apiece and then raced away with the final set, finishing off the match by winning the last eight games in a row.

Alcaraz dropped just nine points in the final set as he beat Jarry 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-0 in two hours and 43 minutes.

Alcaraz, who won five titles from seven finals last year, is a seven-time champion on the tour. Can he win his eighth title in his 10th career final on Sunday?

Norrie Edges Out Zapata Miralles

World no. 13 Cameron Norrie edged out Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the semifinal on Saturday to reach a third final in 2023 and a second in two weeks.

Norrie, who finished runner-up in Auckland last month, also finished runner-up in Buenos Aires last week. He is 17-3 in 2023 and is 7-1 on clay. The three of his defeats this year came against Richard Gasquet in Auckland, Alcaraz in Buenos Aires and Jiri Lehecka in the third round of the Australian Open.

In Rio, the four-time tour-level champion began his campaign with a straight sets win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo. He also beat Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in the second round, but has been stretched to three sets in the previous two matches.

First it was Hugo Dellien, who took the first set in the quarterfinal, before going down in three. Then it was Zapata Miralles, who went toe-to-toe with Norrie in the semifinal, before going down fighting against the Briton.

Norrie had won the first set comfortably after breaking the world no. 63 twice, but he conceded the only break of the second set to allow the Spaniard come back in the contest.

In the final set, both traded a break in the middle of the set before Norrie edged past Zapata Miralles in the tiebreak for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win in two hours and 32 minutes.

Can Norrie get his Buenos Aires revenge on Sunday?
