Mertens in Poor Form

Elise Mertens has had a pretty slow start to the season, as she seeks a revival of fortunes in Monterrey ahead of the American swing in next month.

She is 7-5, with her best result entailing a third-round showing in the Australian Open, where she dismissed Garbine Muguruza and Lauren Davis en route. Before that, she had lost in the opening match of Hobart International to Maryna Zanevska.

Her form woes continued in the Middle East swing too, losing in the second round of WTA Abu Dhabi to Veronika Kudermetova and to Danielle Collins in the Doha Open first round after clearing the qualifiers with some doing.

Mertens hasn’t seen much success on the doubles circuit either; her best result there is the quarterfinal run in the Melbourne Slam with Storm Sanders.

The 27-year-old started the season inside the top 30 but has now fallen down to the 38th spot.

Shnaider, a Promising Star

18-year-old Russian Diana Shnaider is set to compete in only her third tournament of the season.

She has done well so far by her standards; she is now World No. 90 and looks determined to move further up. She began the year with a qualifying loss to Jaqueline Cristian in Auckland and later, made it to round two of the Aus Open as a qualifier, beating Joanne Zuger, Robin Montgomery, Anastasia Tikhonova, and Kristina Kucova.

While she lost to Maria Sakkari, she put up a solid fight, losing eventually 6-3, 5-7, 3-6.

Shnaider made waves on the lower circuits last season, winning three ITF titles and a Challenger trophy in Montevideo. As a junior player, she has reached the final of all four majors in women’s doubles and won the trophy in London, Melbourne, and New York.

Mertens v Shnaider Prediction and Tip

Punters looking for value bets may want to consider backing Shnaider for this. Her chances of winning this one aren’t too bad – especially when considering Mertens’ poor start to the season. Expect an intriguing affair with many games in the offing.
