Van de Zandschulp Knocks Out Sixth Seed

Botic Van de Zandschulp made a solid start in Dubai, knocking out the sixth seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets.

Van de Zandschulp broke the Russian in the very first game of the match, but Khachanov got the break back in the sixth game. However, it was the Dutchman who broke once again late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead.

The second set was on serve over the first four games, but it was the world no. 33 who took charge of the set in the later stages and ran away with the match by winning the last four games in a row.

The Dutchman’s 7-5, 6-2 win over the world no. 14 came in an hour and 35 minutes. He converted 4 of 13 break points and saved 4 of 5 during the course of the match.

The 27-year-old, who is making his Dubai debut this year, improved his 2023 record to 6-4. He was a semifinalist in Pune, but fell in the second round in each of the other three events: the Australian Open, Rotterdam Open and the Qatar Open. Can he cross the second round obstacle in Dubai?

Ymer Eases Past Passaro

Continuing his good form in 2023, Mikael Ymer eased into the second round in Dubai with a straightforward win over lucky loser Francesco Passaro.

The world no. 59 did not face a single break point in the match, while he converted 4 of 7 to win the opener 6-2, 6-3 in 67 minutes.

Ymer improved his overall season record to 16-7. The highlights of his season so far include a runner-up finish in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Challenger in Belgium; a run from qualifiers to the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2 and another last eight finish in Marseille last week.

On the tour, Ymer is 6-6 this season. The 24-year-old will be hoping to build on that as he looks to reach the quarterfinals on his debut in Dubai.

Van de Zandschulp v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Both players are aiming to reach the last eight in their first appearance in Dubai. Ymer has won both their previous meetings, albeit at the lower level. The Swede is also in better form at the moment and so expect him to give the Dutchman a run for his money. Van de Zandschulp is however coming off a big win over Khachanov and he is expected to eventually win the second round as well.
