Djere Routs Sousa in Opener

Djere had played five tournaments this season other than the Davis Cup and at each one of them he has made it to the second tournament. At the sixth, here in Santiago, he continued that trend by defeating Joao Sousa in his opener to march into the round of 16.

And now, for the second time in 2023 he has a chance to win two in two.

After all, he faces a player who needed to qualify to get into the main draw and is ranked more than 120 places behind him. Not to mention his career-best ranking being 171st in the world.

Djere was on court for his opener for just an hour and 18 minutes as he drubbed Sousa 6-3, 6-2 to advance to second. The sixth seed faced no break-points in the match while getting the better of his opponent’s serve on three occasions.

Bonadio Wins Maiden Match

He is 29 years old, ranked 182nd in the world and never won a main draw match at the highest level before this. That’s Bonadio for you.

Or that was Bonadio for you before the start of this tournament.

Now he has his first win on the ATP circuit as he overcame Daniel Elahi Galan 6-3, 7-6 (5) in an hour and 48 minutes to advance to the second round.

Bonadio raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set and while he was broken back once, he came through in 34 minutes to take the lead. In the second, however, Galan made it extremely difficult for Bonadio but the Italian player held on and took the set into a tie-breaker.

He did have a couple of match-points in the 10th game off Galan’s serve but it was in the tie-breaker that he eventually won the match, scooping up two points from 5-5.

Can he extend his own career-best run here?

Djere v Bonadio Prediction and Tip

Djere will need to be careful despite being heavily favourite to win this. An unknown opponent coming off a morale-boosting win could prove a bit of a thorn in the flresh.
