Lajovic Edges Cerundolo in Second Round

Lajovic might have fallen to outside the top 70 on the rankings charts but he has kept pegging away this season and got a few results under his belt.

His latest win against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round might have taken him two hours and 40 minutes but it meant that for the third tournament in a row, Lajovic has now made it to the quarterfinals.

As a qualifier in Buenos Aires he had gotten past Sebastian Baez to enter the last eight stage. He defeated Diego Schwartzman and Laslo Djere in Rio to do the same. And here, after overcoming Camilo Carabelli in the first round, Lajovic got past Cerundolo 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (2) to make it to the last eight stage.

In doing so, Lajovic also saved a match-point off his own serve in the final set before pushing it to a tie-breaker and coming out on top.

Can he now take that one further than he has all season?

Etcheverry Sends the Other Cerundolo Away

It was a bad day for the Cerundolo brothers with the higher-ranked Francisco also getting knocked out of the competition. It was fellow Argentine Etcheverry who got the better of Francisco Cerundolo in three sets and two hours, 29 minutes to make the quarterfinals.

Coming into the tournament as the second seed, Cerundolo fell to the solid defensive play of Etcheverry who saved seven of the nine break-points he faced. And while he did drop a set and missed four match-points in the second set, he got and converted the fifth chance he got and made the cut.

Etcheverry won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the last eight following his quarterfinal appearance at the Buenos Aires Open earlier this season.

Having earlier overcome Fabio Fognini in the first, Etcheverry looks to be battle-hardened enough to take on Lajovic and this could be a match that comes down to the wire.

Lajovic v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

Lajovic will be a favourite here but only just. We also reckon a three-setter could be a par for the course here.
