This will be the first meeting between these two players.

Mertens Needs Three Sets against Ruse

Despite starting out at 2/5 odds to win her second round match, Mertens was stretched to a third set by Elena Gabriela Ruse before she finally came through.

Mertens needed nearly two and a half hours to notch up the win, one that saw her lose her serve four times in the encounter. In turn she broke Ruse six times, including three times in the final set to register a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win.

This comes on the back of a far easier opening round victory for Mertens over Diana Schnaider against whom she had lost just four games.

Once ranked 12th in the world, Mertens has fallen to 42nd at the moment thanks to her lack of consistency on the tour. This can be seen from the fact it’s just the second time this season Mertens has won successive matches in a tournament and never before this has gone three in a row.

Can Mertens make it a hattrick of victories this time?

Cocciaretto Showing Steady Improvement

Almost 12 months ago to the date, Cocciaretto was ranked 242nd in the world and struggling to get the results she desired. Her rise since then has been a steady one and has seen her jump up to a career-best ranking of 48th on the WTA charts.

This is a reflection of consistent results with Cocciaretto coming through to her third WTA quarterfinal for the season already.

Earlier, the Italian player had made it to the final at the Hobart International and entered the last eight stage of the Merida Open before going down to Katerina Siniakova.

And now, with a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) win over Tatjana Maria in the second round, she will take her place next to Mertens and hope she can go one step further than her Merida result.

If she does that, she could well be breaking into a new career-best ranking.

Mertens v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip

Mertens might be starting out as a 11/20 favourite to win this but given Cocciaretto’s form so far this season we are tempted by the odds on offer for her win.
