Donna Vekic v Zhu Lin Head to Head

Way back in 2015 in Baku these two faced off in their only previous competitive match and Vekic had won that in three sets.

Vekic Struggles Past Bonaventure

Twice in this tournament now, including her previous match against Ysaline Bonaventure, Vekic has dropped a set to her opponent but she has shown she is also capable of pulling things in a fighting display.

That spirit has been the cornerstone of Vekic’s performances since her return from injury last season with the Croat having considered retirement from the sport at one stage as well.

Today she has improved to 31st in the world and a semifinal appearance here has already helped her close in on a top 25 slot. Another victory here will mean Vekic will breach that easily.

She did struggle to come through her quarterfinal though, needing two hours and 15 minutes in getting past Bonaventure 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5) despite earning a whopping 15 break-points in the encounter. Vekic’s problem, however, was she converted only three of them and lost her own serve twice which meant she was left fighting in a final set tie-breaker.

The Croat will have a challenge on her hands now as she aims to make it to her first WTA final since the San Diego Open late last year.

Lin Crushes Dolehide’s Hopes

While Lin was a definite favourite going into her quarterfinal encounter against Caroline Dolehide, the manner of her win will please her no end. Especially given that it came on the back of a fighting three-setter in the second round when she had faced Rebecca Marino.

Lin was on court for a mere 76 minutes and got past Dolehide 6-3, 6-2 to seal her semifinal berth – her second of this season following her title victory at the Hua Hin Open.

The fifth seed faced five aces from Dolehide whose first serve win stats were up to 67%. And yet, Lin managed to find a way to attack her opponent’s second serves and broke her opponent four times.

Lin herself faced just one break-point in the entire match which she saved easily.

With the kind of form Lin has shown, she will feel supremely confident despite going up against a potential top-25 player who has herself lost just two matches all season.

Vekic v Lin Prediction and Tip

This could well turn out to be a deliciously close encounter that sees a third set and a tie-breaker or two in it too. Lin to edge it.
