Caroline Garcia v Donna Vekic Head to Head

Vekic holds a slim lead by 5-4, having won three of their last four encounters. They most recently met in the 2021 Olympics where Donna prevailed in three sets.

Vekic in her 11th Singles Final

Donna Vekic of Croatia, ranked World No. 31, could not have asked for a better start to the 2023 season. With form and injury issues impacting her performance in recent years, she is experiencing a much-needed change of fortune this time around.

The 26-year-old is now at an impressive 13-2 and set to enter the top 30 when the rankings are updated on Monday.

Her exploits in Monterrey have been impressive, starting with a walkover against Lesia Tsurenko in the opener and then moving past Emma Navarro and Ysaline Bonaventure. In fact, it was a tight match with Bonaventure as it went to three sets and saw Vekic put to the test – which she passed 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5).

With consecutive quarterfinals across the Aus Open and WTA Linz Open so far, it is clear that Donna is getting close to her absolute best. She has been in an imperious form since reaching the final in San Diego last October.

Garcia Breezes Past Mertens

It was a routine win for Caroline Garcia in the semifinal against Elise Mertens, as she won 6-3, 6-4. The Frenchwoman has been in a clinical form for most of the tournament, evident from her straight-set wins this past week.

Her previous opponents in Monterrey include Kaja Juvan, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, and Mayar Sherif.

Caro has enjoyed a superb season herself and is doing well to build on her phenomenal 2022 spell that saw her close with the WTA Finals crown. So far in 2023, she has reached the quarterfinal in Adelaide 2, the fourth round in Melbourne, and the final in Lyon (loss to Alycia Parks).

In Doha and Dubai, Garcia’s form took a hit, but the current World No. 5 has done well to bounce back.

Garcia v Vekic Prediction and Tip

This one will be interesting. Garcia may be the odds-on favourite, but Vekic is having her moment, and it does not seem like she will go down easy. Expect a fair number of games where the Croat may very well emerge as the winner.
