After making an ordinary start to the season, Wawrinka looked to have found his own in the two indoor hardcourt competitions he played last month.
At both, in Rotterdam and Marseille, Wawrinka registered wins over Richard Gasquet to enter the last eight stage. And while he lost both quarterfinals, including once to Jannik Sinner, it would have done the world number 100’s confidence a world of good.
This is because Wawrinka has been in bit of a strife, struggling to get the results go his way.
At the United Cup, for instance, he won and lost one match. He followed that up with a first round defeat at the Australian Open and then lost to Alexander Zverev in the Davis Cup as well.
But with a bit of momentum now on his side, Wawrinka will hope to try and match up to his performance in Indian Wells the last time he played here. A third round appearance in 2019.

Vukic Comes Through the Qualifying Rounds
Wins over Emilio Gomez and Roberto Marcora enabled Vukic to make it through the qualifiers and into the main draw of this tournament. This will only be the second time Vukic will be featuring in the Indian Wells Masters opener, having done that in 2021.
In fact, Vukic had come through the qualifiers in that edition too and then defeated Pablo Andujar to enter the second round. That has been his only win in this competition.
This season Vukic had made it through the qualifiers of the Australian Open as well, qualifying for the first round with a win over Michael Mmoh. He would go on to lose to Brandon Holt in the opener.
A first round win over Christopher Eubanks at the Delray Beach Open is also his only main draw victory for the season.
Against Wawrinka, things might not be too easy but he can be expected to put up a fight here.

Wawrinka can be expected to win this in straight sets but not before Vukic has pushed him hard in one of the sets, probably even seeing a tie-breaker in it.
