Karolina Pliskova v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Miami Open and Kalinskaya had won that second round match in straight sets.

Pliskova with a Much Better Start to This Season

Ranked fourth in the world till as recently as about a year ago, Pliskova looked to be on a downward spiral when she was knocked out of the top 30 on the WTA charts by the end of 2022.

She looks to have begun the process of turning things around now though, even as she aims to get back into the top 10.

Sure, there have been a couple of opening round exits, with Pliskova losing to Jelena Ostapenko and Danielle Ostapenko to start off the season. And there was another first round loss as she fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in Doha more recently but to go with that there have been some sterling performances too.

A quarterfinal at the Australian Open is a case in point. So was the quarterfinal appearance in Dubai where she withdrew because of an injury.

Can she kick on from those performances and move deeper into this tournament, having gotten knocked out of it in the second round last season?

Walks in the Parks for Kalinskaya

Kalinskaya was a favourite going up against Alycia Parks but even she wouldn’t have thought it was going to be so easy. Because 57 minutes is all it took for Kalinskaya to come away with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Parks in their opening round encounter.

She raced away to a 3-0 in the opening set and while Parks broke Kalinskaya in the fourth game to get one back, there was not too much else she did in the encounter.

The Russian player broke right back and then made it four in a row to clinch the first set. And then in the second, she went one ahead immediately to take a 3-0 lead.

There was no looking back for Kalinskaya from that point onward as she carved out an easy victory.

Kalinskaya entered this tournament on the back of a modest start to the season with a quarterfinal appearance at the Austin Open being her best showing. Can she make it two in a row against Pliskova now, taking advantage of a slightly more vulnerable opponent than she has been in years?

Pliskova v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Pliskova starts off a favourite at 1/2. We might have thought of backing Kalinskaya here had she been at her best – something she had exhibited last season – but at the moment, a Pliskova win seems to be a safe call.
