Anhelina Kalinina worked her way to a seeded place at the Indian Wells Masters and she’ll have the benefit of starting in the second round. The Ukranian has been a really steady performer over the past year, even on surfaces which she doesn’t really call home.
She’s primarily a clay player but her tennis works on all surfaces and that’s her biggest strength. She plays the same wherever she is and it works. The flat groundstrokes and aggressive play is ideal for Indian Wells because she’ll have plenty of time to unload.
Kalinina is 9-6 this year and generally played well but she hasn’t had too much success in Indian Wells. She made it to the second round last year and lost.
This year could be the year where she makes a deeper run because she has enough to take down Fruhvirtova. She simply can’t allow herself to hit multiple errors.

Fruhvirtova Comes Back in R1
Linda Fruhvirotva is far more than simply a tennis prodigy. She’s already an established player who will be making her top 50 debut after this event. She showed a lot of maturity in her first-round match by coming back from losing the first set 0-6 to winning the match.
It also showed that her game is a bit weak against players that can hit the ball hard and flat. Unfortunately, she plays such a player in the next round and it will be very tough.
She will need to battle for every point and her serve will be key. She needs to hit the first serve to keep Kalinina away from the second. Her opponent will attack every slower one and that’s trouble for her because she doesn’t have the power yet to match Kalinina.
Winning this matchup will come down to whether she gets help from her opponent. Sherif helped her but I’m not sure if she will get it this time.

It’s an interesting matchup between two players who are really good. Kalinina has the game to win the match but she needs to play well. She can be beaten if she produces a lacklustre effort which isn’t that uncommon for her.
