Petra Kvitova halted wild card Elizabeth Mandlik’s charge, beating the young American 6-1 7-5 in an hour and 27 minutes. A day after taking out Alison Riske-Amritraj in a first-round shocker, Mandlik was overwhelmed by Kvitova’s power and precision from the baseline.
The Czech lefty fired missiles past the World No. 155 in a dominant first set in which she did not lose a single point behind her first serve. Mandlik felt the pressure immensely on her own service games as a result and was broken three times.
The second set, the American was a lot better and gave a good account of herself as she went toe to toe with the two-time Grand Slam winner. To the surprise of many on Court 3, Mandlik took a shock lead for 5-3 and served for the set at 5-4, but that was the closest she came to leveling the match.
Kvitova recovered and won four games in a row to seal the match. She is yet to advance beyond the third round stage since 2016. Can she change that narrative against Jelena Ostapenko?

Ostapenko Survives Giant Killer Sasnovich
Aliaksandra Sasnovich has earned the tag giant killer in the women’s draw for her knack for defeating high-quality opposition at the most important tournaments.
With Jelena Ostapenko acutely aware of this, she had to go on the attack right from the off and not let Sasnovich have any time on the ball whatsoever. That tactic paid off, with Ostapenko barely missing a ball in sight in the first four games.
But despite leading 4-0, Ostapeko was never assured of the first set with the Belarusian cleaning up her game and the errors creeping into Ostapenko’s game. Suddenly the set was level at 4-4. Just when we thought a tiebreak looked likely, Ostapeko went all guns blazing in the 12th game and got the decisive break by converting her fourth set point.
The second set was completely one-way traffic as Sasnovich broke the Ostapenko serve three times, with the 24th seed’s second serve letting her down (won two of 11 points).
However, the 25-year-old Latvian got her mojo back in the third set, breaking Sasnovich three times, with the Belarusian left to rue on her multiple costly double faults.
Kvitova v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip
This should be a power-hitting contest that pits two of the finest ball strikers in women’s tennis. But the risk-tolerant style invites a lot of errors in their matches.
With that said, the conditions will allow both players to have a crack on the ball within their comfort zone most of the time. For me, I think Ostapenko has a tiny edge with the kind of season she is having.
