Taylor Fritz v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

They played once and it happened last year in Cincinnati. Fritz won easily beating Baez 6-1 6-1.

Fritz Downs Shelton

A very interesting second-round clash saw Fritz come back from losing the first set against rising star Blake Shelton to win in three sets. It took a lot of effort to win the match but ultimately Fritz proved to be the calmer and more experienced player.

He’s the defending champion and Indian Wells has always been a very good event for him. A native of California, he loved this even since childhood and there is just something special that works for him here.

His attacking play from both sides is really hard to counter when it works well and the higher bounce gives him enough time to really set up and unleash his power. The serve is a major weapon again and the casual style with which he approaches tennis simply works here.

Obviously, he can still spray errors quite often but as he proved against Shelton, in time he still finds a very good flow to win the match. This should be simpler because Baez is not very good on hard courts.

Baez Impresses in R2

Sebastian Baez didn’t have to play in round one due to his ranking which mostly comes from his superb clay tennis. He doesn’t miss any clay events and earned enough points in these events to secure a better draw in hard court matches.

He faced a tricky player in Rinky Hijikata who plays well on hard courts but Baez crushed him in their matchup. The Argentine imposed his will earl yon and took the ball fairly early with his forehand giving him an edge over Hijikata. The Aussie was more adept at playing on hard courts but he hasn’t got the power to match Baez.

Generally, the Argentine doesn’t play that well on hard courts but it’s not due to style or anything like that. He simply needs more exposure to this type of tennis. As his career continues to progress I expect him to progress and become at least decent on the surface.

For now, this is good enough but it probably won’t be enough to take down Taylor Fritz. Not in Indian Wells at least.

Fritz v Baez Prediction and Tip

The last time they played was on a hard court and Fritz won 6-1 6-1. I don’t expect a similar thrashing but I certainly expect him to win in straight sets.
