Rybakina Powers Past Badosa

Elena Rybakina knocked out Paula Badosa in straight sets on Monday to advance to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open. The reigning Wimbledon champion will now be hoping to reach a second consecutive quarterfinal at Indian Wells.

Last year, Rybakina was beaten by Maria Sakkari in the last eight stage.

The 10th seed Kazakh, who had a first round bye this year, had beaten Sofia Kenin 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5) in the second round. She had a relatively easier outing against the 22nd seed Badosa in the third round, but still faced some stern resistance from the Spaniard in the second set.

Rybakina broke Badosa twice in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. But she found herself a break down early in the second set, however a late surge allowed her to clinch the one-and-a-half-hour contest 6-3, 7-5.

The world no. 10 served 9 aces in the match; she saved 5 of 6 break points and converted half of the eight break points that she held.

With the two wins, the Kazakh improved her season record to 12-4. She was a finalist at the Australian Open this year, but suffered a tough three-set defeat to Aryna Sabalenka, falling short of a second Grand Slam title.

She was also a quarterfinalist in Abu Dhabi and had made it to the third round of the Dubai Championships before withdrawing with a lower back injury.

Gracheva Stuns Kasatkina

Varvara Gracheva continued her stunning run in the tournament, as the qualifier upset the eighth seed Daria Kasatkina in the third round on Monday.

The world no. 66 started off well with an early break in the first set, but Kasatkina soon took charge by winning four games in a row. However, Gracheva broke again to draw level and then broke for a third time to take the first set. In the second, it was the world no. 8, who broke twice to build a 1-4 lead, but once again Gracheva found her way back in the set. She won five consecutive games to complete a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Gracheva, who qualified for the main draw with wins over Petra Marčinko and Anna-Lena Friedsam respectively, reached the fourth round without dropping a set in the main draw.

She beat Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round and ousted Petra Martic 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. While she was not broken in the first two rounds, she was broken four times by Kasatkina, but she converted 6 of 9 break points against the world no. 8.

Gracheva is playing her best tennis this season. She reached her maiden WTA final in Austin earlier this month, but finished runner-up to Marta Kostyuk. She is 16-9 across levels this year and 9-1 from her last 10 matches. can she continue surging ahead on her Indian Wells debut?

Rybakina v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

With Gracheva in top form, Rybakina won’t take her lightly, but the Kazakh is the superior player and also far more experienced than the Russian, so expect her to reach the quarterfinals.
