Petra Martic v Xiyu Wang Head to Head

Martic on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Petra Martic will be making her ninth appearance in Miami. The world no. 41 has never gone past the third round, having made that far twice in her career. A win in her next match will equal her previous best in Miami.

Martic, the 29th seed, had a first round bye and she will begin her campaign in the second round on Thursday.

The Croatian has already featured in a final this year. Martic rallied past Maria Sakkari in the semifinals in Linz to reach her sixth career final, but she could not add to her two previous titles, falling to Anastasia Potapova in the title clash.

But apart from that run in Linz, Martic has otherwise been in ordinary form. She is currently on a three-match losing streak; the series defeats began in the Linz final and it was followed by back-to-back defeats in Dubai and Indian Wells.

Overall, the 32-year-old is 7-7 across levels in 2023. Can she end her losing streak on Thursday?

Wang Holds Off Late Challenge from Fruhvirtova

Xiyu Wang faced some late resistance from Brenda Fruhvirtova in the first round, but the Chinese player succeeded in overcoming the 15-year-old in straight sets.

The 21-year-old Wang was off to a flying start as she bagelled the Czech player in the first set. The world no. 58 then built a 3-0 lead in the second set, thanks to an early break. But just when it seemed that Wang was cruising to victory, Fruhvirtova found form. The latter won three games in a row to draw level at 3-3. Both then held their serves over the next five games before Wang broke for a second time in the set to win the one hour and 32 minute contest 6-0, 7-5.

The win was Wang’s third of the season, as she improved to 3-6 in 2023. The Chinese player’s other two wins came in the first round in Merida and the opening round in Indian Wells.

Wang, who was a runner-up in the WTA 125 in Valencia last year, had last won consecutive matches in Cluj-Napoca-2 in October 2022. She had gone on to reach the semifinals of that tournament. Can Wang win consecutive matches in Miami? It is only the second time that the lefty has reached the round of 64 in Miami. She has never gone beyond this stage in the tournament.

Martic v Wang Prediction and Tip

Given how Wang has struggled for most parts of the season, Martic holds the edge in this contest. She is also more experienced and was a finalist in Linz not long ago. Expect Wang to put p a fight, but Martic should edge past the Chinese.
