Anastasia Potapova has been excellent on indoor surfaces this year, but has struggled a bit on hard courts. However, the Russian has a pretty good 12-7 season record and is also sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 26, which she achieved on Monday.
So overall it has been a good quarter for the Russian player, who also claimed her second WTA title this year, when she defeated Petra Martic in the final of the Linz Open.
Last year, Potapova had picked up her first WTA title, by winning in Istanbul. In addition she also has three runner-up finishes on the tour,
Potapova will be playing in Miami for the second time. She had lost the opener on her debut in 2021 and failed to qualify last year.
Most recently, she played in Indian Wells, where again she had a first round bye. She won a close three-set contest in the second round against Xiyu Wang but lost to Jessica Pegula in an equally dramatic three-set third-round contest.

Kostyuk Ousts Cocciaretto
World no. 38 Marta Kostyuk got off to a good start as she ousted Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and reached the second round in Miami for the second consecutive year.
Kostyuk, who has been in splendid form throughout the season, needed just an hour and 16 minutes to beat the world no. 49, 6-3, 6-2.
Kostyuk got the solitary break of the opening set and then got a double break in the second. She wasn’t broken in the match despite facing three break points. In contrast, she capitalised on three of the four breaking opportunities she held against the Italian.
The 20-year-old’s season record improved to 16-7 across levels.
Kostyuk had won her maiden WTA title earlier this month by beating Varvara Gracheva at the Austin Open final. She also reached the quarterfinals in Adelaide and Hua Hin, but suffered a first round defeat in Indian Wells.
Having got off to a good start, she will now be eyeing another win.
