Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic moved past Hailey Baptiste in the Miami Open first round, beating the American 7-6(3), 6-1. She started as a qualifier here and beat Carol Zhao and Viktoriya Tomova to reach the main draw.
It was a much-needed boost in confidence for the 30-year-old who, up until this point, had won just two matches in 2023 – both being in the qualifiers of Adelaide International.
Since then, Golubic has featured in five tournaments but failed to bag a single victory. Her losses have come at the hands of players with varying calibre, a list that includes Kateryna Baindl, Petra Martic, Danka Kovinic, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Olga Danilovic.
Viktorija closed the previous season at 31-25 – a far cry from her 2021 spell of 47-21. She has been struggling with her form for some time now.

Samsonova, Seeking Momentum
2023 has been wonderful so far for Liudmila Samsonova. She is now World No. 15 – just three places shy of her career-best ranking of #12, which she achieved in February.
Interestingly, it is the tempo from last year (30-17, three titles) that has kept the Russian afloat in the top 20 despite a tally of 7-7. Her best result in the form of a runner-up feat in Abu Dhabi this year has also done its bit. In that event, the Russian dismissed the likes of Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng.
The 24-year-old also reached the third round in Dubai while in Indian Wells most recently, she was stunned in the opening match by Bernarda Pera in three sets – squandering three match points in the process.
Samsonova v Golubic Prediction and Tip
Samsonova will start this one as the favourite, and while she may be tested by Golubic, it is hard to imagine her losing this one. After all, Liudmila has the experience and an impressive pedigree already – which should be enough for her to beat her 116th-ranked adversary.
