Karen Khachanov v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

Khachanov and Etcheverry have never faced off before in a competitive match.

Khachanov Coming off Surprise Exit at Indian Wells

Having made the semifinal at the Australian Open, a lot was expected from the resurgent Khachanov but he hasn’t quite delivered in the two tournaments that have followed.

Featuring in the Dubai Open after that, Khachanov was bundled out in the very first round by Botic van de Zandschulp there. A first round bye at the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago was followed by an easy win over the struggling Oscar Otte but he didn’t go beyond that.

Facing Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round there, Khachanov failed to overcome his 13/10 underdog opponent, falling in three sets in the process.

What’s interesting to see is that Khachanov’s record in Miami isn’t the greatest. He has featured in six tournaments here and never once gone beyond the third round. In total he has won just two matches in Miami so far.

Now, taking on a clay court specialist in the second round following another opening bye, he will hope to make it a third career win at the Miami Masters.

Etcheverry Eases Past Kotov

Etcheverry’s game is more suited to clay and that can be seen from the amount of clay-court tennis he has played in his career. Spread across all levels of the game, the Argentine has featured in nearly 400 matches on the red dirt and less than 60 elsewhere.

Which is why, despite taking on a qualifier ranked 117th in the world, there was no certainty who was the favourite. At least among the bookmakers.

That didn’t matter to Etcheverry on the day though. He needed just an hour and 21 minutes to come through against Kotov, defeating him 6-2, 6-2 and winning his first ever match in Miami.

Such was Etcheverry’s dominance, he did not face a single break-point while getting the better of his opponent’s serve on four occasions. He also won 86% of his first serve points, giving an indication he is probably enjoying hard-court tennis a tad more.

A further evidence of that could be on offer when he takes on Khachanov in the second round.

Khachanov v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip

While we agree that Khachanov is a favourite here, we also think Etcheverry will put up a brave front and could even take a set off his opponent.
