Angelique Kerber started this season as the World No. 2 but following a rather average showing on the tour, she has now dropped to the eighth position.
The reigning Wimbledon champion reached the quarterfinal in Sydney where she lost to Petra Kvitova. After that, she reached the fourth round in the Australian Open where she was knocked out by a highly determined Danielle Collins.
It isn’t that Kerber hasn’t been playing well of late, but the level of competition right now is something that is making even the top players sweat. This was evident in her performance in Doha, where she lost in the semifinal to Elise Mertens.
The German’s last tournament was WTA Dubai, where she reached the third round before succumbing to Su-Wei Hsieh.
Putintseva’s First Win Since Melbourne
Earlier this year, the 24-year-old Kazakh reached the quarterfinal in Sydney as a qualifier – her best run of the season so far. There, she defeated a couple of big names like Daria Gavrilova and Sloane Stephens before falling to Kiki Bertens.
Next, she played in the Australian Open where she lost in the second round to Belinda Bencic. That was her last victory on the tour, up until now.
Since then, she played in St. Petersburg, Fed Cup, and Dubai but lost her first round matches. Putintseva broke that jinx in Indian Wells against Timea Babos with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory.

On paper, Kerber will start as the favourite to win. However, over the course of her career, she has been defeated by many underdogs and by no means is she invincible. Putintseva will certainly give her a good fight and can very well take this match to three sets.
