Lorenzo Musetti v Jiri Lehecka Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the quarter-finals of Rotterdam last year, Lehecka winning in three sets.

Musetti Struggling for Form in 2023

This is Musetti’s third visit to Miami, his best showing to date being a  third round appearance two years ago, which matches the furthest he has been in any Masters’ event.

2022 was something of a breakthrough year for the Italian. He won the prestigious European Open title on the clay of Hamburg (beating Carlos Alcaraz along the way), and followed that up with a  win on the hard courts of Naples.

However, the Italian has been struggling for form in 2023 so far, and was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open by the South African Lloyd Harris.

Switching to his favourite surface of clay for the South American swing did not produce any marked change of fortunes, and he won just one match in Buenos Aires.

His poor run continued in Indian Wells, where, like in Miami, he had received a first round bye. He was beaten in straight sets by the French player Adrian Mannarino.

Lehecka Eases Past Argentine

Lehecka’s potential was obvious from the fact that he reached the NextGen ATP final last year, finally losing to Brandon Nakashima, after a season in which he had reached two Challenger finals, winning one of them,

And he has already shown signs of fulfilling it, beginning with the Australian Open, where he reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final, in the process beating both Cameron Norrie and Felix Augur-Aliassime.

He showed that was no flash in the pan in Doha, where he beat Andrey Rublev, and had match points against Andy Murray before finally losing their semi-final.

Rublev, though, was to get his revenge in Indian Wells.

His first round opponent in Miami was the Argentine clay court specialist Federico Coria, whom the Czech beat with a minimum of fuss. One break was enough to earn him the first set, and then another put him in control of the second, and the match.

Lehecka was never once threatened on his own serve.

Musetti v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

Based on current form alone, Lehecka would be considered favourite for this match, but that is further underpinned by the fact that the surface suits his game more than the Italian, who is regarded as more of a clay court specialist.
