Dan Evans v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

They played only once so far and Sonego won that match indoors in straight sets. It was played in 2020.

Evans Winless Since Australian Open

The last time Dan Evans won a match he was still in Australia. The match in question was played on January 19 so he hasn’t won a tennis match since then. It’s been two months and five consecutive losses for the Brit whose ranking didn’t suffer too much.

It’s time to pick up some wins otherwise he’ll see himself drop outside of the top 50 and I’m pretty sure he won’t like that. The score this year is 3-7 overall which is not good and his performances in Miami generally haven’t been that good.

He’s lost in the second round a couple of times now even though the surface technically could play into his strengths. It’s hard to predict what kind of display we’ll get from him here but he’ll need to serve well. Much of what he does well relies on the serve and if he brings a good level, then it will be much easier for him.

It’s likely going to be a close match with a few rallies technically deciding the winner so he’ll need to be really sharp.

Sonego Downs Thiem

Lorenzo Sonego scored a really solid win in the first round taking down a struggling Thiem. The win isn’t that much impressive but the Austrian played really well and Sonego handled that first set really well. It was a close tiebreak with the Italian remaining composed.

His game is one that has a lot of risk to it and quite often he’ll play himself out of matches which makes this win over Thiem solid. Sonego relies a lot on confidence and getting this win will certainly make him more likely to win this next one.

Their only matchup went to Sonego and one crucial thing that might help him here is the serve. He had it working really well against Thiem and if he can repeat that performance he’ll be likely to win. He’s had a shaky year so far with a 6-8 record so he needs some wins.

It’s on his racquet though so if he performs well he’ll get the win.

Evans v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Neither player are playing in special form but the Italian actually got a win, something that Evans hasn’t done in months. I’ll back the Italian to win though the over seems likely as well.
