Off-Color Ruud Makes a Good Start in Miami

Last year’s finalist, Casper Ruud is off-color this season, but the world no. 4 will be relieved to have started his Miami Open campaign in style, beating Ilya Ivashka in just an hour and 25 minutes.

The Norwegian won 81% points on the back of his first serve, saved 2 of 3 break points and converted half of the eight breaking chances that he created during the contest to beat the Belarusian 6-2, 6-3.

Barring Auckland, where he lost his opening match, Ruud has won all his opening matches this year, but he has not won consecutive matches. So there will be a bit of pressure on him to win two in a row in Miami.

He had made it to the title clash last year, only to fall to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. In addition to his only ATP 1000 final, Ruud also finished runners-up at the French and the U.S. Opens during a highly successful 53-24 run in 2022.

In stark contrast, Ruud has just not got going in 2023. He is playing his sixth tournament of the year and improved to 5-5 following Friday’s victory. Can he build on the win in Miami?
