Jessica Pegula v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

Three previous meetings between these two players have all led to wins for Pegula. They last played as recently as the Indian Wells Open earlier this month and Pegula had needed three sets to get past Potapova.

Pegula Overcomes Late Stumble against Linette

Magda Linette had had a solid start to the season but in more recent times her form had wavered a tad. And that showed in the odds on offer when she took on the world number three Pegula, and subsequently in the result of their fourth round match as well.

Pegula raced away to an easy opening set win and while Linette put up a fight in the second, it was the American who triumphed in a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes.

Three breaks of serves in the very first set helped Pegula garner a 5-0 lead before she dropped her serve. A fourth break followed as Linette managed to win just 10 of the 30 points on her own serve in the opening set.

In the second, Linette broke early to try and gain parity and was soon serving for the set at 5-2 after having broken a second time. Pegula wasn’t done though, as she carved out three successive breaks of serve like in the first set to overturn the direction of the match.

A 6-1, 7-5 win should give her the confidence going into her quarterfinal against a player who had never won a match in this tournament before this.

Potapova Overturns Controversy to Continue Winning

For the third successive time, Potapova had entered her match as a second favourite according to bookmakers. And for the third successive time, she overcame her opponent to march forward.

Having crushed Marta Kostyuk in straight sets in the second round despite being a 6/5 underdog, she was 9/5 odds to win against Cori Gauff in the third round and did just that.

And then in her round of 16 battle against Qinwen Zheng, Potapova overturned the 4/6 favourite 6-4, 7-6 (4) to move forward. The match lasted an hour and 41 minutes.

Enduring nine aces from Zheng, Potapova did not let her poor serving affect the result as she kept her nerve at the most difficult of times. What was surprising to see was that despite winning a lesser percentage of points on both, the first and second serve, than her opponent, Potapova managed to come through in two.

Can she now overturn her poor record against Pegula?

Pegula v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Pegula is 7/20 to win this and we reckon she should win this but not before Potapova has put up a strong showing. Might even see a third set.
