Elena Rybakina v Petra Kvitova Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two. Rybakina won in the quarterfinals in Ostrava last year, while Kvitova won in Adelaide-2 this year.

Rybakina Ousts Pegula

Elena Rybakina continued her winning streak in the semifinal of the Miami Open on Friday, defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets and clinching her 13th win in a row.

The Kazakh is now a win away from becoming just the fifth woman to win the Sunshine Double. Of the four previous women who won the Indian Wells and the Miami Open the same year, Steffi Graff did it twice in 1994 and 1996. Kim Clijsters achieved the feat in 2005, Victoria Azarenka in 2016, while Iga Swiatek won both the titles last year.

Rybakina has been in exceptional form this season and a 21-4 season record is a reflection of that. She reached her second Grand Slam final at the Australian Open but the 2022 Wimbledon champion finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.

Rybakina then won the Indian Wells title by getting her revenge over Sabalenka in the final. Can she win her second WTA 1000 title on Saturday?

She is in excellent form at the moment and although she needed three set wins to start her campaign in Miami, the last three victories have all come in straight sets. Rybakina, who has struck 57 aces in the tournament so far, served 11 of those against Pegula in the semifinal. The world no. 7 came back from a break down thrice in the first set, before sealing it in the tiebreak. She also came back from 0-3 and 2-4 down in the second set. Rybakina won four consecutive games to close out the contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Rybakina had begun her campaign with a three-set win over Anna Kalinskaya in the second round. She then rallied from a set down to beat Paula Badosa in round three. Rybakina then knocked out Elise Mertens in straight sets in the round of 16 and then handed Martina Trevisan a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing in the quarterfinals.

Kvitova Into Her Maiden Miami Open Final

Petra Kvitova reached her first Miami Open final with a straight sets win over Sorana Cirstea in the semifinal on Friday.

The 15th seed was broken in the sixth game of the first set but she made a remarkable comeback from 2-5 down in the set.

Kvitova saved two set points on Cirstea’s serve at 4-5 and won five games in a row to wrap-up the first set. In the second, the world no. 12 broke the Romanian in the very first game and then held on to the advantage till the end of the match to complete a 7-5, 6-4 victory in an hour and 45 minutes.

The lefty, who was a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells, is looking like a player to beat. She began her Miami campaign by winning the first three matches in straight sets. Those included wins over Linda Nosková in the second round, 22nd seed Donna Vekić in the third and Varvara Gracheva in the round of 16. Kvitova played her only three-setter of the tournament in the quarterfinal, battling past Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

A 29-time tour-level champion, Kvitova last won a title in Eastbourne last year. She also made it to the final of Cincinnati in 2022 but went down to Caroline Garcia to finish runner-up.

This will be her 13th final at the WTA 1000 tournament. She has won 8 times before at that level, but has lost the last three WTA 1000 finals she has featured in. The last time she won a WTA 1000 title, it was in Madrid in 2018.

Rybakina v Kvitova Prediction and Tip

Both players are in tremendous form, but it is the Kazakh who holds the edge. She was splendid in Indian Wells and also at the Australian Open. Recently she has shown the big match temperament and how to soak in the pressure in big tournaments.

While Kvitova is playing like a two-time Grand Slam winner, she will make things difficult for Rybakina, but for the Kazakh, the incentive of joining a rare group of players to have claimed the Sunshine Double should drive her to another title success.
