Kaia Kanepi v Madison Brengle Head to Head

Kanepi leads 1-0, last beating Brengle in the 2015 Brisbane International in straight sets.

Kanepi Struggling to Win

Kaia Kanepi has had a disappointing start to the season, and she now seeks a revival in the clay swing.

Her record stands at 3-7, and has lost her last four matches. The Estonian’s last tournament was the Miami Open, where she fell to Camila Giorgi in round one after saving three match points in the deciding set. Before that, she lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opener of the Indian Wells Open.

Kanepi’s three wins of the season have all come in Adelaide – spread across the two consecutive events in the city.

The 37-year-old is one of the most experienced players on tour at the moment, but her physical fitness and dexterity may make things difficult – especially on a tricky surface like clay. That said, the World No. 57 is not a player to be underestimated in any match.

Brengle in a Similar Tide

Madison Brengle, who is currently ranked #86, is 6-10 in 2023. However, she is not in as bad a situation as Kanpei, which gives her some advantage in the opening match in Charleston.

While she lost in Indian Wells and Miami in round two, it was not before handing losses to the experienced German Laura Siegemind and the resurgent American Amanda Anisimova, respectively.

Those results were also Brengle’s best ones of the year, but it is going to be interesting to see if she can continue to build on them on the clay courts. In the last four seasons, Madison has never won more than 8 matches on the surface. Moreover, there was only one season where she managed to win more matches than lose them (8-7, 2021).

Kanepi v Brengle Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way. It is hard to call a winner at this point, but we may very well be looking at a long game of tennis here.
