Tsurenko Was a Finalist in Hua Hin This Year

Lesia Tsurenko began the year at no. 137 but the Ukrainian has made steady progress over the last three months to break back into the top 100.

Currently ranked no. 81 in the world, Tsurenko is 20-5, across levels, this season.

A four-time champion, Tsurenko reached her first final since 2019 in February, knocking out Bianca Andreescu in the semifinal of the Hua Hin Open. But she could not clinch the title, finishing runner-up to Zhu Lin.

The Ukrainian got her revenge over Zhu in the first round in Indian Wells and she won the second round match as well, beating Donna Vekic in three sets, but she later pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons.

Tsurenko will be playing in Charleston for the third time. She is yet to win a main draw match in the tournament.

She doesn’t particularly have a great record on clay, but given the form she has been this year, the 33-year-old will look to use all her experience to begin well in Charleston.

Ormaechea Makes it to the Main Draw

World no. 168 Paula Ormaechea held her nerves to edge out world no. 105 Magdalena Frech in a nail-biting three-set qualifier on Sunday.

The Argentine took the first set, but was outplayed by the Polish player in the second set. They went toe-to-toe in the final set, before Ormaechea edged the tiebreak for a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 win.

Frech broke her opponent five times while getting broken just four times in the match. She also won two more points than Ormaechea, but in the end it was the latter who won the key points in the final set tiebreak to seal teh contest.

Ormaechea had earlier beaten America’s Jamie Loeb in straight sets in the first qualifying round.

Ormaechea, who was a finalist in Bogota in 2013, reached her first WTA 125 final earlier this year in Cali, Colombia. She couldn’t clinch the title though, going down to compatriot Nadia Podoroska in the final.

Overall, she is 10-6 this year, having only payed in the qualifying rounds or the lower level tournaments. Fifteen of her 16 matches this year have come on clay courts. She prefers playing on the surface and 31 of her 32 ITF finals have all been on clay courts. She has won 16 titles at that level, all on clay.

Ormaechea has played in Charleston twice before but this will be her first main draw appearance in the tournament since 2014.

Tsurenko v Ormaechea Prediction and Tip

Tsurenko has displayed excellent form this year. She is also vastly experienced at the tour level and should ease into the next round.
