The two have played each other once before in the quarter-finals at Chengdu in 2016, also on a hard court, with Khachanov winning in straight sets.
Khachnov, Looking for a Good Run
Karen Khachanov is a player who desperately needs a good run in a major tournament.
2018 was such an outstanding year for him; the Russian won three ATP titles, including the biggest tournament of his career to date, the Paris Masters.
By comparison, 2019 has been a grave disappointment so far. He was beaten in the first round in Doha by Stan Wawrinka, and then exited Melbourne in the round of 32 at the hands of Roberto Bautista Agut. Another first round exit came in Sofia before perhaps his most disappointing result of all, losing to Dutch wildcard Tallon Griekspoor in Rotterdam.
He needs to prove to himself, and the world, that those 2018 results were not just a flash in the pan.

Now 37, Lopez is much nearer the end of his career than the beginning, and the world number 78 is unlikely to be adding any time soon to his six ATP career titles.
He has had a disappointing 2019 to date, going out at the first time of asking to Jordan Thompson in Melbourne, and then suffering a first round exit in Delray Beach. And, when he did win a match in Mexico, he had to withdraw from his second round match with Alex de Minaur because of his injury.
However, unlike many Spanish players, he prefers to play on faster courts, and has an excellent record on grass. He has a big serve, and before his chances are discounted in this match altogether, it should be borne in mind that he beat former Grand Slam finalist Tomas Berdych in the first round here, albeit with the aid of two tie breaks.
