Frances Tiafoe v Steve Johnson Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both of which came on clay and Johnson has won them both. The first was played in Houston in 2018 while in 2021 they met at the French Open.

Tiafoe Returns to Clay After Solid Start to 2023

A quarterfinalist in this tournament last season, Tiafoe will enter the Houston Open on the back of a solid start to the year in hardcourt competitions.

Sure, he would have liked to add to his solitary ATP title he had won back in 2018 but Tiafoe did help USA win the United Cup competition earlier this season. He did so by winning all five of his singles matches.

His best showing in individual tournaments came at the Indian Wells Open where the American made it to the semifinal, falling to Daniil Medvedev in a hard-fought match.

What might be a worry for Tiafoe coming into this clay court competition is his overall record on this surface. While he has won nearly 53% of his matches in hardcourt competitions in his career, that figure is a far lower 41% on clay.

And while Johnson isn’t quite a tricky opponent first up, he would do well to remember his own record against the fellow American.

Johnson Shocks Bagnis

Johnson’s record on clay isn’t the best.

His record this year is even worse.

Add to that the fact that Johnson was coming off a six-match losing streaking and facing up to a clay-court specialist, it wasn’t a surprise that he started off a distant 8/5 second favourite against Facundo Bagnis.

That the American managed to grab the encounter in three sets would have been a shot in the arm as a result of that. It gives the former world number 21 some respite as he looks to try and make it to back to the top 100 in the rankings.

Against Tiafoe he will continue to remain the underdog but there’s always a chance he will put up a brave front.

Tiafoe v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is 1/6 to win this but there is every chance that Johnson will put up a fight and push the world number 15 to the distance.
