Tormo Returns after a Long Break

Sara Sorribes Tormo has spent the last six months recovering from a foot injury.

Her last match was in late September in the WTA Parma, where she lost in round two to Lauren Davis. Tormo ended the season 24-18 (ranked World No. 61), of which she was 11-6 on clay.

To see her return with a bang in Bogota comes as good news to her supporters; Sara dispatched Aliona Bolsova 6-0, 6-4, needing just 90 minutes. The highlight was undoubtedly her brilliant service game, where she won 83% of the points behind the first serve.

The 26-year-old is well-experienced and much ahead of Arango, having peaked at the 32nd spot last February. Over the years, Tormo has enjoyed a lot of success on clay, too – which certainly gives her an edge in this match.

Arango upsets Tan

Emiliana Arango, ranked World No. 242, is off to a great start at home as she moved past France’s Harmony Tan 7-5, 3-1(retired).

This is only her second WTA event of the season – the other being in Merida, where she lost in the qualifying rounds. Arango’s best results have come on clay courts, which is why she will be in her element when taking on a well-versed adversary in Tormo.

Emiliana was a semifinalist in the Cali Challenger and ITF Naples and the runner-up in ITF Mosquera.

As a junior player, the 22-year-old Colombian was a semifinalist in the US Open.

Tormo v Arango Prediction and Tip

Barring any fitness issues, Tormo should win this one. Granted that she hasn’t played professional tennis in a while, but she can make up for it with her superior experience.

That said, it may not be easy as Arango is playing with home advantage, and she has got some flair for the surface. In fact, at 5/2, she does make for a valuable underdog bet. Expect a thrilling match.
