Badosa Edges Past Fernandez

A semifinalist in Charleston in 2021 and a quarterfinalist last year, Paula Badosa made it to the round of 16 this year as she edged past Leylah Fernandez in straight sets on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Spaniard came back from 0-3 down in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. She then went up a break early in the second set, but the Canadian broke back to draw level at 4-4. Eventually the set was decided in the tiebreak, in which Badosa saved a set point before clinching the contest 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in an hour and 53 minutes.

Badosa won 75% points on the first serve and converted 3 of 10 break points while saving half of four that she faced.

The world no. 33 had begun her campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the first round.

Thanks to the two wins the 12th seed has improved her season record to 8-4. She had made it to the semifinals in Adelaide-2, but withdrew from the last four contest and also the Australian Open due to an injury.

Ever since her return in Doha, Badosa made early exits from four tournaments. This is only the second time that she has won consecutive matches. She tends to do well in Charleston and hopes to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament for the third time in as many appearances with a win on Wednesday.

Shnaider Shocks Kudermetova

World no. 95 Diana Shnaider shocked fifth seed Veronika Kudermetova in the second round on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Russian came back from 1-3 down in the first set to win the last four games in a row and take a 1-0 lead. She found herself a break down twice in the second set, but came back on both the occasions before breaking again for a third time in the set to complete a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Shnaider had also won the first round match 6-4, 6-3, beating America’s Alycia Parks.

This is just her third appearance in a tour-level tournament. She made her debut at the Australian Open, reaching the second round after qualifying for the main draw. She then lost in the first round in Monterrey. This is the first time she has won two matches in a row. She is an excellent clay court player and had won a WTA Challenger event on the surface last year. Can she pull off another upset win on Thursday?

Badosa v Shnaider Prediction and Tip

Badosa has always done well in Charleston and she is off to a good start this year as well. Expect the Spaniard to reach the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.
