Sixth seed Victoria Azarenka rallied from a set down to oust Sloane Stephens in the second round of the Charleston Open on Wednesday.
Azarenka came back from a break down twice in the first set but she conceded a third break late in the set to lose the opening set.
The Belarusian clawed her way back into the contest to force the decider and then she dominated the final set to take the two hour and four minute contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Broken five times in the match, Azarenka converted 7 of 9 break points to move into the round of 16 for just the second time in Charleston. The first time she did that in 2008. This is only her third appearance in the tournament and she will be hoping to reach the quarterfinals for the first time.
She has reached the last eight twice in 2023, once in Adelaide and the other time at the Australian Open, where she lost in the semifinals.

Kalinskaya Beats Cornet in Three
Anna Kalinskaya held off a comeback bid from Alize cornet to win her second round contest and move into the round of 16 in Charleston.
The world no. 70, who is making her first appearance in Charleston, had beaten the world no. 30 and 11th seed Anhelina Kalinina 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the first round.
She carried that form into the second round, beating the Frenchwoman 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2.
Kalinskaya had 19 opportunities to break Cornet’s serve and she took six of them, while the world no. 64 had nine chances to break the Russian and she capitalised on five of them.
Kalinskaya improved her season record to 10-9 following the win. Her best so far has been a quarterfinal finish in Austin. Can she reach a second quarterfinal in 2023 by knocking out another seeded player on Thursday?

Azarenka is the superior player. She is far more experienced and looked in good touch against a quality opponent in the second round contest on Wednesday. Expect her to advance to the last eight.
