Tallon Griekspoor v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

Griekspoor won their only meeting in Rotterdam in 2018.

Griekspoor Is 14-6 This Season

World no. 35 Tallon Griekspoor brings a 14-6 record into his second Monte-Carlo Masters. Last year he had lost in the first round of the tournament.

Griekspoor had begun the 2023 season by winning his maiden ATP title at the Maharashtra Open in Pune. He was also a semifinalist in Rotterdam and a quarterfinalist in Marrakech, where he began his clay court season this week.

Seeded no. 4th in the tournament, the Dutchman had a first round bye. He defeated Elias Ymer in the second round but went down to Roberto Carballes Baena in three sets in the quarterfinal.

The 26-year-old has played very little on clay courts at the tour level and a 8-9 career record reflects that. However, he has played a lot of tennis on clay at the Challenger level and nine of his 11 titles have come on the surface.

So he can be a dangerous player on the surface and now that he is growing as a player on the tour, he will be aiming to be more successful on clay.

Wawrinka is a 2014 Champion

2014 champion Stan Wawrinka will be playing his first match of the season on clay. He has found little success on clay since 2019 but this year could be different for the world no. 88.

The three-time Grand Slam champion is 9-6 this year and as a result of his consistency he has broken back into the top 100 for the first time since last year.

Wawrinka reached back-to-back quarterfinals in Rotterdam and Marseille and made it to the round of 16 in Indian Wells (his first fourth round appearance in a Masters 1000 tournament since a quarterfinal finish in Paris in 2020).

With three good results this season Wawrinka will come to Monte Carlo with a lot of confidence. The 38-year-old Swiss is a 16-time champion on the tour from 30 finals and is 7-6 in clay court finals.

In Monte-Carlos he had beaten Roger Federer for the title in 2014 and was a semifinalist in 2009. He has also had three quarterfinal finishes in the tournament.

Griekspoor v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a good contest. Wawrinka has been very competitive this season and he will bring all his experience to play in the opener. However, the Dutchman has already played a couple of matches on clay this year and is in good form as well. He could edge out the Swiss in the opener.
