Gael Monfils v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head-toHead
The two men have met twice before, with Monfils winning on both occasions, although neither match was recent, with their first meeting coming on the clay of Hamburg in 2011, and their second encounter coming in this very tournament three years ago.
Monfils, Getting Back to his Best
Monfils has been enjoying an excellent year to date, showing that he is beginning to put the injury problems that wrecked his season last year behind him. He won his eighth career title in Rotterdam, and then reached the semi-finals in both Sofia and Dubai.
He will be looking to continue that sort of form this week in California, but, if he has hopes of progressing far into the tournament, he will need to play a lot better than he did in his second round match against Leonardo Mayer of Argentina on Saturday, with the world number 56 testing him before he finally triumphed in the third set.
Ramos-Vinolas – Clay Court Specialist Enjoying his Week
Ramos-Vinolas is primarily a clay court specialist. His one single ATP title, and five out of his six losing finals have all come on that surface, so he would have come into Indian Wells with low expectations, viewing it primarily as a way of warming-up for the clay court season to come.
However, he has had a good week so far, thrashing Bosnia’s Damur Dzumhur in the first round, and then comfortably disposing of the number 15 seed, Marco Cecchinato in the second.
Monfils is a different order of magnitude of challenge, but he has little to lose.
